UK: Easter retail suffers cold weather slump

Despite the expected retail boost of an early Easter the dreadful weather over the holiday meant that retail sales slowed in March, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The BBC reports that although like-for-like sales are actually up by 1.9% over the same period in 2012, this was down from the 2.7% rise that was seen in February.

But although retail missed out, the sales of food (up 2.5%) and homeware (1.9%) increased compared to last year and resulted in the highest like-for-like sales increase on a quarterly basis since December 2009.

Another interesting statistic was that online sales slowed in March (only growing by 6.6% compared to 13.9% the previous year), suggesting that people are supporting the High Street by browsing online and then going in-store to make their purchases.
